The exhibit is located in the Holmes Museum's main gallery.

  • The Archaeology of Etzanoa

Etzanoa is a Wichita Indian site near the town of Arkansas City Kansas. The Spaniards called it the "Great Settlement" after an expedition in 1601. Wichita State archaeology professor, Dr. Donald Blakeslee discovered the town to be inhabited by nearly 20,000 ancestral Wichita Indians, making it possibly the largest settlement in North America in the 1600s. The exhibit tells the story of Onate and the Spanish expedition and shows artifacts found at the site.

  • Echoes of Expression: A Cultural Symbolism Collective

This exhibit in the Jackman Gallery was created by the 2025 Museum Exhibition class. Learn more about the Holmes’ collection of global ethnographic artifacts through the exhibit Echoes of Expression: A Cultural Symbolism Collective on display at the Lowell D. Holmes Museum of Anthropology.

  • Reimagining Aleppo through Peace and Pain

This two-part exhibit contrasts photos taken by Dr. Jens Kreinath during a day trip to Aleppo in May 2010 ("A Time of Peace") with images by world-renowned war photojournalist Narciso Contreras ("A Journey of Pain"). Kreinath's tranquil images depict a tranquil atmosphere. Contreras' images, captured in fall 2012 from the frontline, show unfiltered moments of utter despair experienced by the inhabitants of the once-glorious city that is now drawn into the fray of Syria's merciless war.
