We are proud of our student-parents and caregivers. As a student-parent or caregiver, you've navigated challenges, celebrated victories, and shown incredible resilience. We'd love to hear your story and celebrate the path that brought you here.
Student-Parent and Caregiver Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the dedication, perseverance, and achievements of students who balance their educational journey while caring for children, family members, or loved ones. These individuals often navigate complex responsibilities, make difficult sacrifices, and demonstrate extraordinary resilience in pursuing their academic goals.
This month provides an opportunity to acknowledge their unique experiences. We are proud of our Shocker students for their perseverance, hard work, and commitment to their goals. Their stories inspire our community and remind us that success is built through courage, determination, and resilience.

My name is Alicia, and I am a student at Wichita State pursuing my degree in Elementary Education. I am currently working two jobs and am a mom to a 3-year-old daughter, so life is definitely busy! I returned to school because I wanted to help build a better future for my family while pursuing something I am truly passionate about. I have always enjoyed working with children and knew from a young age that I wanted to become a teacher. Becoming a mom made my passion for education even stronger. I want to become the kind of teacher who helps children feel supported and excited to learn. Balancing college and motherhood can be challenging, but my daughter is also one of my biggest motivations. I want her to grow up seeing that it is possible to pursue your goals even when life is busy and challenging. Being a student-parent has not always been easy, but it has helped me discover how capable I can be. I am proud to be working toward my degree while raising my daughter, and I hope by sharing my story, other student-parents know they are not alone. Balancing college and parenthood takes dedication, but it is possible! When I am not studying or spending time with my daughter, I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes!

I decided to come back to school because I wanted to build a career that would allow
me to provide for my family and create a more secure future for my children. Being
a wife and mom while going to school can be challenging, but my children are also
my biggest motivation. When school feels overwhelming, I remind myself that they are
watching me work toward something important. I hope that one day they can look back
and see how hard their mom worked and know that they can accomplish difficult things
too. I am currently working toward earning my BSN and becoming a registered nurse.
I chose nursing because I want a career where I can make a difference in people's
lives while continuing to grow professionally. Ultimately, I want to build a career
that I am proud of, provide for my family, and set an example for my children that
hard work and determination can take you far.

What is one piece of advice or encouragement you’d pass along to another student-parent
or caregiver?
One piece of advice I would give another student-parent or caregiver is that it’s
not always going to be smooth sailing, and that’s okay. Communication is key. Let
your family, classmates, and instructors know when you need help or support. There
will be stressful days when balancing school and family feels overwhelming, but having
a strong support system and communicating what you need can make all the difference.
Most importantly, keep reminding yourself why you started and take it one day at a
time.
