Welcome Adult Learners!

We are excited to introduce the Adult Learner Community and Connections program! Our goal is to equip adult learners who are experiencing their first semester or first year at Wichita State with the necessary skills, connections, and resources to confidently begin or continue your college experience. We are committed to fostering a supportive environment where students can develop self-confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

About the ALCC program

Rooted in Andragogy (or adult learning theory), Adult Learner Community and Connections is a new and innovative approach to ensure adult learners have a smooth and seamless transition into Wichita State University (WSU). This will be accomplished by equipping our students with the necessary skills, connections, and resources to either begin or continue their college experience with self-confidence and a sense of belonging.

Who is it for?

ALCC was designed for adult learners who are experiencing their first semester or first year at Wichita State University, although any adult learner at WSU could benefit from it.

How can students benefit from this program?

ALCC creates a sense of community and belonging among adult learners by connecting them with peer ambassadors in supportive, peer groups. It is also delivered through Blackboard, WSU’s learning management system, and will be grounded in a holistic approach through the creation of 8 interactive online modules built around the components of well-being. This will empower adult learners to better navigate technology with confidence, while also gaining knowledge of, at minimum, 5 commonly used campus resources

Meet your peer ambassadors

Our Peer Ambassadors—fellow adult learners—are here to help you transition smoothly during your first semester. Through peer-to-peer support and shared experiences, we’re building a stronger, more connected community for all adult students.

"My grandmother passed away in May 2023, and one of our last conversations was about her hope that I would return to school. She always believed in my potential and encouraged me, even as a single mom. In October 2023, I honored that conversation by applying to WSU Tech and began my college journey again.

Returning to school as an adult can feel intimidating at first, but it’s absolutely worth it. Use your life experience as a strength, lean on campus resources, and give yourself grace along the way."

"Every week is something new. Hard exams, an unexpected bill, long hours, budget cuts, a work injury, etc. I live by it's not my fault, but it is my responsibility. In other words, tomorrow happens with or without me. I keep a good attitude and a growth mindset. Grit is a superpower. I make an effort to show face to everything, not just for my benefit but also for what I represent."

"Two years ago I ended up getting divorced, and that changed the plans I had for my future. I have three kids and work 3 part-time jobs. I decided it was time to go back to school. I want to be able to show my kids that they set hard goals, and still achieve them.

If this is something that will better your life and help you reach your goals it will be worth it! There are always ways to get around challenges if you decide that it is something you want to do!"
