Gamified: What You Need

You will need to obtain the following items before the class begins. These encompass computing equipment, software, and basic drafting supplies. These replace your personal field equipment and daily expenses needed for an in-person camp.

Computer Hardware

  1. Desktop or laptop (Windows, Mac, or Linux) with mouse and keyboard
  2. If you will be using a laptop, you will need a separate mouse to make movement in the game much easier.

Computer Software

  1. Purchase Minecraft (JAVA Edition!!)….NOT Windows 10 edition
    • https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-java-edition
    • Please see the system requirements listed on the above webpage
    • You will access the mapping locations on a Minecraft server. You will be sent address and instructions on access before class begins.
    • You will also be sent instructions on how to use this game for the purposes of this class.
  2. Geology resource pack (free)
    • This downloadable resource pack will upgrade Minecraft textures and features for the purposes of this class.
    • You will be sent link and instructions for installation before class begins.
    • You will place this  resource pack in your Minecraft resource pack folder. Detailed instructions will be sent at a later date
  3. Google email account (free)
    • Will be used to link to my Google photo folders from Minecraft

Drafting supplies

  • Colored pencil set
  • Drafting/mechanical pencils
  • Clear plastic protractor
  • Graph paper (10 squares to the inch)
  • Drafting style pens
  • Engineers Ruler (scales 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 1:60)
  • Vinyl eraser
  • Whiteout fluid

Other provided items

  1. Downloadable base map for each mapping area.
    • You will print these out and draw your geologic map on basemaps.
    • You will submit these by taking photo of your completed map and submitting through Blackboard
