AI Strategy Council

Our Mission

The AI Strategy Council was formed at the request of Provost Monica Lounsbery and in response to the Kansas Board of Regents AI-related goals for the academic year. The KBOR goal asks that state universities submit a report detailing current initiatives, research, and instructional strategies related to AI in an effort to help identify best practices, foster collaboration, and position Kansas institutions as leaders in AI-driven education and workforce development.

WSU's AI Strategy Council comprises faculty and staff from across the university and involves hundreds more through focus groups, training opportunities and discussion groups, ensuring that all voices are heard on the issues surrounding AI.

The council envisions an academic institution where artificial intelligence (AI) is thoughtfully and ethically embedded into every facet of university life—enhancing operational excellence, enriching teaching and learning, and accelerating research and innovation. With faculty, staff, and students at the heart of this transformation, we strive to cultivate a dynamic, inclusive, and future-ready campus that harnesses AI to enhance human potential, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance the Wichita State University mission and priorities.

Working Groups

 
FOCUS AREA CHARGE(S)
Instructional Use / Academics
  • Identify and provide guidance on possible changes to pedagogy, learning processes, the academic experience, etc.
  • Provide input into curriculum changes.
Research
  • Identify and provide guidance on possible research opportunities.
Business Operations
  • Explore ways to improve business operations by leveraging AI, identify strong use cases and lessons learned.
Governance, Risk and Compliance
  • Ensure guidelines, best practices, guardrails, policies, etc. are in place and processes exist to keep them up to date. Ensure training is carried out to reinforce the process.
  • Ensure that the processes (defined above) include the ability to identify, assess, and appropriately remediate threats to the organization.
  • Ensure capabilities are in place to measure adherence to processes and policies.
Ethics
  • Through ethics research and regular engagement with campus and other networks, identify emerging ethical and social issues concerning AI development, use, and integration into society.
  • Provide regular forum and contacts list for sharing expertise to address complex issues.
Training (Internal)
  • Explore and enhance AI trainings that improve personal productivity
Community Engagement / External Training
  • Explore and enhance AI outreach and education for the community and partners.
Communications & Visibility
  • Strengthen Wichita State's digital presence to improve how AI-powered search and generative platforms discover, understand and recommend the university.
  • Communicate Wichita State's AI initiatives, advancements and resources through coordinated communications, storytelling and digital content for internal and external audiences.
