At Wichita State University, applied learning opportunities are more than just hands-on
experiences—they are gateways to future success. For Matthew Dixon, a Psychology major,
working with HOPE Services has been a defining chapter in his academic journey, merging
real-world practice with academic growth.
Matthew is one of the first students to receive the Wichita State University, State
of Kansas Applied Learning Funds. “Being able to work on campus as a student had been
an important part of my success as having income provides me with securities that
I wouldn't normally have. Thanks to the applied learning funding, I can afford to
live off campus and pay rent,” says Matthew.
HOPE Services (Health Outreach Prevention and Education) at Wichita State University
plays a crucial role in supporting student mental health and wellness. Among their
key initiatives is Suspenders4Hope™, a program designed to educate and equip individuals with the tools to support others
in need. Through trainings and workshops, HOPE Services strives to create a campus
environment that prioritizes mental wellness and prevention of suicide, substance
misuse/overdose, and sexual violence. Learn more about Suspenders4Hope™ here.
In his applied learning role at HOPE, Matthew takes on multifaceted responsibilities
to ensure the organization’s programs and events run seamlessly. From preparing events
and editing websites to engaging in table events, his work plays a vital role in maintaining
HOPE's mission of promoting mental wellness across campus.
“This experience has been a great professional opportunity,” Matthew said. “It’s exposed
me to unique projects and workplace practices I can expect to encounter in my future
career. Working in group settings, like staff meetings and smaller team projects,
has prepared me well for collaborative work environments.”
Through his role, Matthew has gained a deeper understanding of how college campuses
can promote mental wellness. Observing HOPE’s operations has highlighted the importance
of organization and space management in creating a smooth and impactful student experience.
A particularly meaningful moment in his role was preparing HOPE kits for individuals
struggling with suicidal ideation. “We assembled and prepared about a thousand kits
to send to those in need,” he said. “It felt incredible to be part of something that
could help so many people in the community.”
As someone pursuing a career in counseling, this role has been especially enriching.
Collaborating closely with Counseling & Psychological Services has offered Matthew
valuable insights into the field, providing the opportunity to learn from professional
counselors and their expertise.
Beyond career preparation, his applied learning role has enhanced his academic experience
at Wichita State. “Balancing work with my class schedule has taught me to stay productive
during breaks between classes,” he shared. “Being both a staff member and a student
has prepared me for the consistency needed in my future career.”
Since beginning his role at HOPE, Matthew has noticed significant growth in his skills
and confidence. Time management and organization, as well as the ability to code research
data and transform ideas into actionable programs, are now strengths he carries forward.
“My experience at HOPE has prepared me not only for my coursework but also for my
future career,” he reflected. “It’s been an invaluable opportunity to grow professionally
and personally while making a positive impact on campus.”
