Congratulations to those who received grants in June!  The tentative numbers for WSU researchers under Academic Affairs for FY2023 are: submitted proposals budgeted a total of $91,355,481, $78,147,769 in awards received, and $3,857,731 in indirect cost recovery generated.  Congratulations and thank you for all of your talents and hard work.

Purpose: “Wild Animal Initiative’s Seed Grants program provides small amounts of funding to facilitate projects that will test promising new techniques or approaches, incorporate welfare assessments into ecological research and management, or adapt animal welfare science approaches for wild contexts.  Seed Grants are ideal for early-career scientists or more established principal investigators who have no previous experience with wild animal welfare research.”

This RFP is intended to support projects for a period of one (1) year. This RFP also seeks to foster the development of new partnerships between community, healthcare, and disability organizations. If the proposed project includes organizations that have an established/existing partnership(s), then the proposed project should include significant and new efforts undertaken by the partnership and/or new partners joining the existing collaborative efforts. Purpose: “The purpose of the REAP TAG Program is to enable applicants to provide technical assistance to Agricultural Producers and Rural Small Businesses applying to REAP, with priority for Applicants assisting distressed or disadvantaged communities and for Applicants pursuing projects using underutilized technologies or seeking grants under $20,000. To meet this purpose, the Agency will make grants to eligible entities to provide services to assist potential REAP Applicants in submitting Complete Applications.”

REMINDER - Funding Agency: Kansas NASA EPSCoR
Application Deadline: August 18, 2023 at 12noon
Purpose: “The research efforts must: 1) Contribute to and promote the development of research capability in NASA EPSCoR jurisdictions (i.e., Kansas) in areas of strategic importance to the NASA mission; 2) Improve the capabilities of the NASA EPSCoR jurisdictions to gain support from sources outside the NASA EPSCoR program; 3) Develop partnerships among NASA research assets, academic institutions, and industry; and 4) Contribute to the overall research infrastructure and economic development of NASA EPSCoR jurisdictions.”

REMINDER - Funding Agency: Kansas NSF EPSCoR
Application Deadline: August 31, 2023
Purpose: “First Awards are seed grants for early career, tenure track faculty. They are designed to spur research in resiliency and smart infrastructure while helping awardees compete nationally for funding. REI Awards are for any faculty member at designated universities in Kansas to kickstart projects in resiliency.”
Amount: Direct costs budget of $50,000

Purpose: “This award provides support for collaborative exploratory work that opens new ground for comprehensively assessing or mitigating the impacts of climate change on human health. This program will support both individual scientists and multi-investigator teams. Early career faculty and postdoctoral fellows nearing their transition to independence are especially encouraged to apply, whether individually or within teams.  Our goal is to prime new discoveries in areas that are difficult to reach through discipline-specific, silo-driven approaches. Through this program, we will provide flexible funding for conceiving and piloting work that will grow into productive and informative collaborations among researchers approaching connected questions from fields that usually do not interact.”

Application Deadlines: August 31, 2023
Purpose: “This initiative seeks a research resource that will continue to build, grow and maintain a database of clinical trials of complementary and integrative health interventions, that can be used to conduct systematic reviews to inform the public, practitioners, and policy makers. The research team will need to describe the features of the database, and whether it is building upon or converting an existing database, and how it will be maintained and kept current during the award period. This initiative also encourages applicants to address means to increase outreach, access and use of the database for systematic reviews from the broader scientific community.” 
Amount: Applicants should propose a budget that is reasonable and appropriate for completion of the research project.  Application budgets may not exceed $400,000 direct costs per year (excluding consortium F&A).

Purpose: “The History of Art Grants program supports scholarly projects that will enhance the appreciation and understanding of European works of art and architecture from antiquity to the early 19th century. Grants are awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, museum exhibitions and publications, photographic campaigns, scholarly catalogues and publications, and technical and scientific studies.  Grants are also awarded for activities that permit art historians to share their expertise through international exchanges, professional meetings, conferences, symposia, consultations, the presentation of research, and other professional events.”

Purpose: “The Digital Art History Grants program is intended to foster new forms of research and collaboration as well as new approaches to teaching and learning. Support may also be offered for the digitization of important visual resources (especially essential art history photographic archives) in the area of pre-modern European art history; of primary textual sources (especially the literary and documentary sources of European art history); for promising initiatives in online publishing; and for innovative experiments in the field of digital art history.”

Purpose: “NCGVR has issued a request for proposals for rigorous research, dissertation and postdoctoral projects on ERPOs, also known as red flag laws, in the United States.” 
Amount: No maximum limit on individual research awards; $25,000 for dissertation awards; $50,000 for postdoctoral awards.

Purpose: “The Solar Energy Technologies Office SETO will provide funding for research and development to reduce material usage, improve installation quality and resilience of photovoltaic (PV) systems, and address handling of PV systems at the end of life.”

Funding Agency: U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA): National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)
Application Deadlines: September 7, 2023, September 14, 2023 and more, depending on Program Area Priority
Purpose: “The AFRI Foundational and Applied Science Program supports grants in AFRI priority areas to advance knowledge in both fundamental and applied sciences important to agriculture.”  Topics vary greatly; for instance, proposals topics due in September include “Water Quantity and Quality,” “Nanotechnology for Agricultural and Food Systems,” “Rural Economic Development,” and “Center for Research, Behavioral Economics, and Extension on Food Loss & Waste.” 
Amount: Varies by topic but generally $300,000 for Seed Grants, $650,000-1,000,000 for Standard Grants and $50,000 for Conference Grants. 
REMINDER - Funding Agency: U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)
Application Deadline: September 8, 2023
Purpose: “The MURI program supports basic research in science and engineering at U.S. institutions of higher education that is of potential interest to DoD. The program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts where more than one traditional discipline interacts to provide rapid advances in scientific areas of interest to the DoD.” 
Amount: Typically, between $1,250,000 and $1,500,000 but varies by topic.
Funding Agency: Scripps Howard Fund
Application Deadline: September 10, 2023
Purpose: “The Scripps Howard Fund is seeking innovative ideas to get post-secondary students from diverse backgrounds invested in journalism and foster environments where all journalism students can actively participate and feel welcome. Special consideration will be given to proposals that offer experiential learning as an element of the project.” 
Amount: $30,000
Funding Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF)
Application Deadlines: September 11, 2023 and February 9, 2024
Purpose: “SoS:BIO is a joint program between the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health and the Science of Science: Discovery, Communication, and Impact Program of the NSF. SoS:BIO supports research that advances the scientific basis of science and innovation policy, with a focus on the biomedical sciences. SoS:BIO will fund the development of models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can inform science policy and the development of the scientific enterprise. SoS:BIO welcomes individual and collaborative research projects and places a high priority on interdisciplinary research and on broadening participation.”
Amount: $100,000-$250,000 per year

Purpose: “The SoS:DCI program is designed to advance theory and knowledge about increasing the public value of scientific activity. Science of Science draws from multiple disciplinary and field perspectives to advance theory and research about scientific discovery, communication and impact.”

Application Deadlines: Mandatory Preliminary Proposals due September 13, 2023; If invited, full applications due December 13, 2023
Purpose: “The IUCRC program provides a structure for academic researchers to conduct fundamental, pre-competitive research of shared interest to industry and government organizations. These organizations pay membership fees to a consortium so that they can collectively envision and fund research, with at least 90% of Member funds allocated to the direct costs of these shared research projects.  IUCRCs are formed around research areas of strategic interest to U.S. industry. Industry is defined very broadly to include companies (large and small), startups and non-profit organizations. Principal Investigators form a Center around emerging research topics of current research interest, in a pre-competitive space but with clear pathways to applied research and commercial development. Industry partners join at inception, as an existing Center grows or they inspire the creation of a new Center by recruiting university partners to leverage NSF support. Government agencies participate in IUCRCs as Members or by partnering directly with NSF at the strategic level.”

Purpose: “The vision of the TERP is to minimize and mitigate the impact of military-related toxic exposures and improve the health and quality of life of those affected. The TERP aims to support impactful and highly relevant research focused on military-related toxic exposures that Service Members, Veterans, or their beneficiaries may be exposed to as a result of deployed, garrison, or other work environments and living conditions. It is expected that research findings would also benefit the general population.”
Amount: $500,000 in direct costs

Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) STEM Hub: 2022-2023 Grant Training Webinar Series: September 8, 2023

The NSF HSI STEM Resource Hub Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 webinar series focuses on celebrating and learning from successful NSF HSI awardees.  We host panels of successful PIs on specific topics that will engage our audience and support grant writing efforts for those planning a proposal submission. This webinar series focuses on a broad array of topics that promote student success, wellness and diversity and inclusion. Dr. Martha Desmond and Dr. Delia Valles are the hosts for this series. The HSI STEM Hub recommends participation in these webinars to learn from successful awardees, particularly if you are currently writing a proposal or are interested in writing a proposal to secure a grant.  The September 8, 2023 topic is “Online Adaptation to Promote Student Success” (rescheduled from May 5, 2023).

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs

Wichita State University continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Laura Pham   

Laura joined the Office of Research in February of 2022 as a Grants Coordinator on the Pre-Award Team, and by July of 2022, she was promoted to the position of Contracts and Grants Specialist. Laura attended College of the Ozarks, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Ag. Horticulture. She utilized her degree by working at Botanica for seven years, beginning as an intern, continuing all the way to the first staff gardener position for the Downing Children’s Garden. She then chose to utilize her minor in Sociology and worked as an Activities and Admissions Coordinator for the Timbers Apartments at the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation. Laura is glad to have now found her career home in WSU, loving the challenges and variety involved with working in the Office of Research. Her husband of 13 years, Quy, also works at WSU as the Executive Catering Chef for Chartwells. Together they love spending time fishing, reading and gaming with their sons, Thomas (9) and Eli (3).   Read more about the Office of Research staff…

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Requiring Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER Plans)

Beginning in FY 2023, all DOE Office of Science Funding Opportunity Announcements and DOE National Lab Announcements and other funding solicitations will require applicants to submit a Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plan as an appendix to their proposal narrative. PIER Plans should describe the activities and strategies applicants will incorporate to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their research projects. PIER Plans will be evaluated as part of the merit review process and will be used to inform funding decisions.

“New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is a cohort-based leadership program that promotes collaboration among outstanding early- and mid-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals during a two-year term of service. We are seeking U.S.-based emerging leaders in all disciplines of the sciences, engineering, and medicine with an established track record of professional excellence and demonstrated commitment to service beyond their immediate discipline and institution.
