U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS): Science and Technology (S&T): Technologically Speaking Podcast

A recent topic on the Technologically Speaking Podcast was “With Data Standards, You Know Exactly What to Expect.” S&T program manager Norman Speicher discussed “the urgent need for interoperability standards in response to the increasing effects of climate change—think floods or wildfires. Much of the response and recovery information that is gathered by flood sensors, wildfire sensors, and local agencies exists in unique and proprietary formats. Interoperability standards would allow these large amounts of data (that are already being collected) to be combined and shared, creating a clearer picture to prevent, plan for, and respond to emergencies. Tune in to hear Norman talk us through what happens when data can’t be shared, as well as S&T’s collaboration with the Open Geospatial Consortium, which helps ensure that it can be in the future.” Listen to this and previously recorded DHS Technologically Speaking podcasts here.

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Michelle White

Please help us welcome the newest member of the Office of Research Post-Award team, Michelle Townsend-White!  She began her career at WSU nearly 22 years ago in the Controller’s Office – Cashiers, then moved to Campus Recreation at the Heskett Center in 2004 and to Financial Operations & Business Technology in 2013 with Accounts Receivable and then joined Accounts Payable in the WSU Travel Office in 2017.  With her vast university knowledge, she is a great fit and addition to the Office of Research. She hails from our capital, Topeka, KS where she received an Associate Degree from Washburn University in business.  After Michelle’s move to Wichita, she began the pursuit of a BBA with a focus in Management and subsequentially, she also graduated with a BGS in Sociology. In Michelle’s downtime she enjoys spending time with family and friends, especially game nights! She also enjoys traveling to visit her mother in England. When she’s not traveling you may find her out and about at the library, volunteering with the WSU Rowing Team, bowling, crafting, being of service, the movies or even bingo.   Read more about the Office of Research staff…

National Science Foundation Dear Colleague Letter (DCL): Bioinspired Design Collaborations to Accelerate the Discovery-Translation Process

“To facilitate the translation of knowledge generated through research in the biological and engineering sciences to solutions and prototypes needed for societal and economic impacts, this DCL seeks to leverage current NSF programs to: 1) Encourage early-stage, transdisciplinary collaboration of two or more investigators doing research in biological and engineering sciences with the potential for bioinspired design applications; and 2) Accelerate the translation of research findings into projects with potential societal and economic impacts that could be ready for commercialization.Read the NSF Dear Colleague Letter: 23-055
