In 1944, a time when few African-Americans were permitted to attend college, let alone
play collegiate sports, Linwood Sexton enrolled at Wichita State University on a full-ride
football scholarship offered by maverick football coach, Mel Binford.
The scholarship covers tuition and fees up to 15 credit hours per semester at the
Kansas resident rate, on-campus housing for a double room with an unlimited meal plan
with $300 Shocker Dollars and a $500 stipend per semester for books.
Wichita State University has chosen the top 10 finalists for the Linwood Sexton Endowed
Scholarship, a full-ride award geared toward minority students majoring in business
or education.
The announcement of the Linwood Sexton Endowed Scholarship recipient will be at 10:30
a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the Marcus Welcome Center.
The finalists are:
Sebastian Araiza Bejarano, Ness City High School
Eduardo Avila, Liberal High School
Carolina Delgado Sonora, Andover Central High School
Jada Escobar, JC Harmon High School, Kansas City
Bria James, Belleville High School, Illinois
Juslin Medina Santos, Duncanville High School, Texas
Ian Ramirez-Mathews, Wichita High School North
Alicia Saunders, Wichita High School Southeast
Diana Vasquez, Emporia High School
Dianna Velasco, Wichita High School South
To be eligible for the scholarship, students had to have a 21 or higher ACT score
and a 3.0 or higher GPA. All finalists will receive competitive scholarship packages
to attend WSU in the fall of 2020.
